Blame Betty Loves Pins Ups of All Sizes

I have been a long time fan of Blame Betty. Their merchandise is always on point, the shop is glorious (though I have only seen photos), and the owners are just the coolest! So when I recently noticed that their website was featuring plus size pin ups, I knew I just had to share. The think I found the most notable thing about that, is that they chose to show these curvy kittens along with their lovely straight sized models. I mean…wow! When does this happen? Like…almost never. Lucky for us, Kati LeClair (co-owner) was gracious enough to answer a few questions for me.

Zaftig:
When did you start carrying plus sizes and how did you make that decision?

Kati:
We have always carried every size that our suppliers make, but for quite a few years that was only S-XL, some went to XXL. There has been a huge shift in our supplier market over the last 5 years however, and XXL has become a standard minimum size to manufacture, with many of our brands offering up to XXXL- some going to XXXXL or higher. I was so glad to watch the change happening, as we had been asking for it for years. The selection continues to get better every season.

Zaftig:
I have seen your plus size models included right along with your straight size models. This is so awesome and highly unusual! Was this a conscious choice? Or just a no brainer for you?

Kati:
It was both a no brainer, and a conscious decision. I don’t choose models based on size, but feel and how they look in the clothes instead. We have worked with girls from a 4-18, how do you separate beautiful ladies like that? We are all different body shapes, I wanted to see them all together in our list view so that every woman felt good looking at our selection. I personally don’t like to be segregated, for any reason.. why should the curviest models have to stay in one place? We sell all sizes as well when a dress is shown off on a confident, gorgeous curvy size 14 – not just size 14’s. It’s the beauty of pin up, and this style in general.

Zaftig:
Are you finding more brands offering plus sizes these days to retailers?

Kati:
See above! 🙂

Zaftig:
How have your customers responded?

Kati:
We have a hard time keeping our curviest sizes stocked they are moving so quickly, and I have never had anything but positive feedback. Heart warming positive feedback, actually- women thanking me for showing real body types as a main image for a wiggle dress. For making them feel welcome on our website. We do have a Curvy Section on our site, as a way to make it easier to find sizes that are available in XXXL or up, but I didn’t ever want a customer (read: a real woman on the other side of the screen) feeling like they only had one section to shop in on our site, or in our store.

Zaftig:
Who are your plus models in the curvy section? Are you looking for models? If so, where could girls submit their photos to you?

Kati:
Currently you will find the absolute babe Stela Licina (https://www.facebook.com/stelalicina.model.mua) sprinkled throughout the site, she was Calgary native but can be found in Vancouver these days. Every time she comes home I sink my claws into her and make her shoot with us You will also see the drop dead gorgeous Roxy Floggings of the Garter Girls Burleque. (https://www.facebook.com/roxie.floggings) These photos of her in a bikini – that is actually the first time this babe had ever put one on! (blog post coming soon about that one.) One of our suppliers Hell Bunny also shoots with a few fabulous curvy models that you see in there, but only one of them I have had the pleasure of meeting in London at a trade show. She is a sweet girl named Lita from the UK.

We are shooting all the time, and are honoured to receive a large amount of model submissions as it is. We welcome submissions or enquiries to info@blamebetty.com.
