This past Friday Wet Seal launched their Jr. Plus line into 36 stores. One of my favorite Bloggers Marcy Guevera hosted a launch party in their Brea California location and I had the good fortune to stop by. I found myself in the presence of blogging royalty including (in addition to Marcy) Marie Denee aka The Curvy Fashionista and Allison of Curvy Girl Chic. Both of them, of course, looked fabulous and were impossibly, wonderfully nice!

Did I fail to snap a picture of the hostess? Yes! Did I fail to hand over my phone to take pictures with any of these amazing people? Yes, again. Sigh…I was blogger starstruck. What can I say?
Now, let’s get into it, shall we? I am not a person who enjoys writing anything negative. That said, I do feel a responsibility to be honest. I applaud Wet Seal for diving into the Plus Size waters so bravely. There seem to be fewer and fewer brick and mortar stores for us to shop in. I don’t know about you, but for me (a fit maniac), trying my clothes on is pretty crucial.
While there is a reasonable assortment of clothing online, I found what was represented in store to be lacking. However, that could very well just be a shipping delay or possibly dure to the seasonal change in product. I’d like to think they plan on having most (if not all) of their styles in stores. It became apparent to me immediately that this is absolutely a Jr plus line. I was hard pressed to find more than a small handful of items to try on in styles I would actually wear. Hey, I’m 38, clearly not a junior customer. The sizes are 1X, 2X, 3X only. So our in-betweenie sisters are those of us on the outside on a size 20 may still have to shop elsewhere.
At the time of this post, I found the sizing to be all over the place. The waists were far too big for me and the sleeves/busts were a bit too tight. Having spent years watching and learning the product development side of plus size clothes, I understand this. It’s not easy. We are all shaped so differently! However, I have great hope that Wet Seal will put the time and money into getting a little closer to the target on their fit/sizing. In fact, I sent them an email offering my opinion and willingness to help….guess we’ll wait and see if I hear back.
In closing, I want to reiterate my appreciation to Wet Seal for hearing the cry of a customer base so under-served. They have my attention and I look forward to seeing their progress in the arena.
